Timing chains are not like the belts where they need replaced as much (or at all in most cases) however, lack of proper lubrication, and improper oil change intervals can lead to issues with the cam phasers and other timing components found in these engines which could lead to the chains stretching. Though not as common, this can lead to your engine being out of time and not running properly or worse. The most common symptoms would be the dreaded P0016 and P0017 codes.
